O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her parents in Wheaton located in Illinois and then graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. She was a part of a couple of television commercials, before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then cast as a recurring role in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Alongside guest-starring on other shows and appearing in independent films and made-for television movies in addition, she was a star of several TV shows. Donna Abandando is her first part as a main character on ABC's NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the big-haired team secretary for the ABC drama NYPD Blue from 1993 until 1996. Every year, she received Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in a Drama Series. Together with the her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in an Drama Series in 1995.
