O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her parents in Wheaton located in Illinois and then graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. She was a part of a couple of television commercials, before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward.
